How to Build a Capsule Wardrobe
By Naomi Okafor · 8/10/2026
A capsule wardrobe is not about owning less for its own sake. It is about owning the right things, so that getting dressed becomes effortless and everything works together. As a stylist, it is the advice I give most often, and the advice clients thank me for most.
Start with the foundations. A beautifully cut coat, a pair of tailored trousers, a crisp white shirt, and a knit in a neutral you love will carry you through most of a season. Choose these in quiet colours and exceptional fabrics. They are the pieces you will wear the most, so they are worth the investment.
Then add character. This is where a single sculptural piece, an unexpected texture, or a bolder colour earns its place. Because your foundations are calm, one statement piece is all it takes to make an outfit feel considered rather than safe.
Finally, think in outfits, not items. Before adding anything, ask whether it works with at least three things you already own. If it does, it belongs. If it does not, it will hang unworn. A capsule wardrobe rewards restraint, and it makes room for the pieces you genuinely love.
